Last week, the Alsace region came to London. We went along to one of London's most popular wine destinations 28-50 Fetter Lane for the Alsace Wine Dinner.
Executive Chef Justin Le Clair has created a bespoke menu especially for the dinner which was hosted by Master Sommelier Clement Robert. Robert talked us through the history behind the wines as we enjoyed four amazing courses, each with their complimentary wines from the French region - in fact, the region is recognised around the world as being one of the only producers of wine with such an unusually diverse variety of high quality grapes. These wines throughout the night ranged from very dry and light bodied to opulent and full flavoured.
We started the night with an Alsace Muscat - Hugel "Classic" 2013. The wine had the fragrance of fresh grapes and a subtle floral aroma which tasted slightly bitter but a perfect aperitif.
The first course smoked eel, edamame bean, ponzu and coriander was absolutely delicious. This was paired with an Alsace Riesling - "Lieu dit Linsenberg" 2012, which was dry, classy and fruity. Which partnered perfectly with the eel.
The second course consisted of Burrata, grilled bread crumbs, baby greens with a truffle vinaigrette - accompanied by an Alsace Pinot Gris- Keuntz Bas Alsace "Trois Chateaux" 2013. This had a smoky aroma with notes of dried fruit, toast and I could even sense a touch of beeswax! This wine was very rich and so complimented the heavy, cheesy dish perfectly.
The main course was pan-seared duck breast, new potatoes and roasted onions with a glass of Alsace Pinot Noir - Domaine Paul Blanck, 2014. This red wine had aromas of autumnal leaves and, like many Pinot Noirs, was an excellent match for the duck.
We ended the evening with Munster cheese, taosted cumin and sour dough toast. A Gewurztraminer, Domaine Weinbach "Cuvee Laurenece" 2012 - a full-bodied and fruity aroma. A great wine to end the evening.
Overall, the dinner was a fantastic culinary as well as educational experience, and as on that appreciates different varieties of grape, I came out feeling much more knowledgable. We certainly left the dinner feeling very satisfied and a little light headed!
